Decoded output can differ from source codingChannels change payload requirementsCheck the actual supported routePCM represents audio samples directly in a defined sample format. Linear PCM configurations specify characteristics such as sample rate, integer or floating-point representation, precision and channels. PCM can carry more than stereo when the output path supports the configuration.
A receiver displaying PCM describes the signal it is receiving at that stage. It does not by itself prove that the original programme was recorded losslessly, that the source codec was PCM or that every channel is mapped correctly.
Decoded output can differ from source coding
A player can decode compressed audio into PCM before sending it to an output device. Another path can forward supported encoded audio for a downstream decoder. Those arrangements place decoding at different stages without automatically establishing a quality ranking.
An original hypothetical source uses a compressed stereo codec, which the player decodes to two-channel PCM. The receiver’s PCM label is accurate about its input. It does not erase the source’s earlier compression history.
Channels change payload requirements
For uncompressed integer PCM, rate × precision × channel count gives a simple payload bit rate. At 48 kHz and 16 bits, six channels require 48,000 × 16 × 6 = 4.608 Mbit/s before overhead. The same rate and precision with two channels requires 1.536 Mbit/s.
These are representation calculations, not minimum broadband requirements for a compressed video service. The network can carry a compressed track that is decoded only after arrival.
| PCM attribute | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Sample rate | Defines sample timing |
| Integer/float and precision | Defines sample representation |
| Channel layout | Associates signals with intended positions |
| Output path | Determines supported delivery to the endpoint |
| Source history | Remains separate from the current PCM label |
Check the actual supported route
Apple documents multichannel PCM in its audio-output context, and Android distinguishes linear PCM from compressed output formats. Exact capability still depends on the device, application, connection and endpoint.
For sound problems, record the PCM channel count/layout and path rather than assuming PCM means stereo or lossless provenance. A working two-channel test does not establish a multichannel configuration.
