Name the metric and sampling methodDelay variation is not segment-duration variationInterpret the term carefullyJitter is often used informally for variation in packet arrival timing or delay. Technical measurements need a more precise definition: different delay-variation metrics compare different observations and can produce different numbers from the same traffic.
A stream can encounter uneven delivery even when average throughput is adequate. Buffers can absorb some variation, but the effect depends on deadlines, available buffered media and the transport and player behavior.
Name the metric and sampling method
A maximum-minus-minimum delay range, a variation between consecutive packet delays and an application’s own displayed “jitter” are not automatically equivalent. State what the tool measures and the interval represented. Averaging results can hide a short severe burst that matters to playback.
An original hypothetical sequence delivers five packets at steady intervals, then pauses briefly and delivers the next five together. Over a long interval, the total delivered bytes can match a steady case. The arrival pattern is different, and a real-time consumer with a small buffer may experience a different result.
Delay variation is not segment-duration variation
A variable-rate encoded segment can be larger than its neighbors and take longer to transfer without any packet-delay anomaly. A player’s request times also include scheduling and server behavior. Segment diagnostics can show the practical delivery effect but do not directly measure packet-level jitter.
Similarly, changing video frame cadence is not the same metric as changing packet arrival timing. The display may judder despite timely delivery when frame presentation and refresh timing interact.
| Observation | What it measures |
|---|---|
| Packet-delay variation | A defined relationship among packet delays |
| Segment request duration | Application-level request completion |
| Buffer-depth variation | Playable media available over time |
| Visible motion judder | Presentation cadence perceived on the display |
Interpret the term carefully
When an application reports jitter, keep its name, version and metric definition with the value. Compare similar sample intervals and conditions. A low average value to one target does not guarantee that media transfers from another endpoint meet their deadlines.
A useful diagnosis combines timing variation with buffer behavior and the affected interval. It does not infer a universal acceptable number or blame Wi-Fi merely because the delivery arrived in bursts.
