Read the hierarchy as a set of relationshipsStatic and dynamic presentations have different update contextsPreserve the selected branchMPEG-DASH describes media through a Media Presentation Description, usually called an MPD. The manifest organizes a presentation into time periods, track-related groups and encoded representations, with information used to locate media resources.
An MPD is metadata, not the decoded picture or sound. A .mpd URL alone does not establish the codec, permissions, exact-device support or availability of all referenced media.
Read the hierarchy as a set of relationships
A Period occupies part of the presentation timeline. AdaptationSets group related representations, and a Representation describes an encoded choice with its associated media addressing. Audio, video and text can have separate groups and resources.
An original hypothetical presentation has one Period, a video group with two bit-rate choices and an English audio group. The player needs a suitable video representation and audio selection, plus their initialization/media dependencies. Downloading the XML successfully is only the first part of that chain.
Static and dynamic presentations have different update contexts
A static presentation describes a fixed presentation span. A dynamic presentation can describe live availability and changing timeline state. The DASH-IF timing guidance defines a restricted interoperable model with explicit timeline, availability and update expectations; it should be read as scoped implementation guidance rather than a claim that every optional DASH technique is identical.
| Element/concept | Question |
|---|---|
| MPD | What presentation and timing context is described? |
| Period | Which interval of the presentation is active? |
| AdaptationSet | Which related track choices belong together? |
| Representation | Which encoded choice is selected? |
| Segment addressing | Which resources supply its media samples? |
Preserve the selected branch
A large MPD can contain many choices the client did not use. For diagnosis, record the active Period, selected representation, addressing context and first failed resource. A format declaration still needs to match actual payload and device support.
A useful report separates manifest retrieval, selection, initialization, segment delivery and decoding. Do not assume a generic DASH logo guarantees all codec or subtitle combinations on every player.
