Enabling passthrough makes audio silent

Check the supported encoded path and actual received format before treating silence as missing source audio.

If audio works in one output mode and becomes silent after enabling passthrough, the change is useful evidence. It may have moved decoding to another device or selected a path that does not support the encoded format.

Preserve the original setting and exact source audio configuration. A successful video picture does not validate the audio endpoint path.

Record the before-and-after chain

Note the selected audio track, codec, channel layout, player output mode and receiver/display input information. Include every intermediate device, such as a television, receiver, soundbar or switch. Exact capabilities need current manufacturer guidance rather than a guess based on branding.

In an original hypothetical chain, player-decoded stereo PCM works, while forwarding a selected surround format produces silence. The comparison changes representation and possibly channels, so it does not isolate one component automatically. The supported formats at each stage need checking.

Confirm the endpoint receives the intended signal

Use its documented information panel and player diagnostics where available. An encoded direct-output route requires an endpoint able to decode that format. If the receiver shows no recognized input, preserve that observation. If it recognizes the format but a channel is missing, investigate layout/mapping separately.

Do not assume passthrough is always necessary for surround or that PCM means stereo. A supported multichannel PCM path can be a valid arrangement. Conversely, a working two-channel PCM comparison does not certify all multichannel PCM configurations.

Choose the supported mode and report the difference

Restore the working documented mode after recording the test, unless current exact-device guidance establishes another supported configuration. Change one setting at a time. Avoid forcing unsupported formats or applying a universal codec toggle from an unrelated device guide.

A useful report lists source track, before/after output, connection chain, endpoint input result and any error. It can establish a mode-sensitive audio-path problem without claiming the source is silent or the receiver is defective. If the player selected a different audio rendition at the same time, include that confounder so support can compare like configurations.

  1. Record source and original working output mode.
  2. Trace every device in the audio path.
  3. Check the endpoint’s actual received format.
  4. Use a documented supported mode and preserve the comparison.
