World Snooker Tour: tournaments, frames and sessions

Understand the professional snooker tour and distinguish points within a frame, frames within a match and rankings across a season.

The World Snooker Tour, or WST, is the professional circuit. It contains multiple tournaments; a “World Snooker” programme label does not automatically mean the World Championship or its final.

Snooker graphics can show several scores at once. Points belong to the current frame, frame wins describe the match, and ranking lists describe results across tournaments. Those numbers answer different questions.

Points and frames are different score units

Within an ordinary frame, players build points through scoring and penalties. Winning that frame then adds one frame to the match score. A large points margin does not ordinarily earn two frames.

In a fictional best-of-eleven match, the target is six frames. A 5–3 frame lead is not yet victory; a 6–3 result completes the match. The current frame’s points can be shown alongside that running frame total without replacing it.

A session can be only part of a match

Longer matches can be divided into sessions. A session’s end is a pause in the programme, not necessarily the match result. The existing frame score provides the starting context when play resumes.

A recording labelled “second session” should consequently retain the tournament, players and match round. Without those identifiers, it can look like a separate match even though it continues the same contest.

Ranking lists serve different qualification purposes

WST distinguishes its official rankings from one-season lists used for particular event qualification. The one-season Players Series route narrows through the World Grand Prix, Players Championship and Tour Championship. A position on one list should not be silently substituted for another.

For a guide, identify the actual tournament and round before relying on a broad tour logo. “Quarter-final” identifies a match’s place in that event; a ranking position explains wider season context. Neither tells you the current frame score.
