BWF Super 1000: the tour category and the 2027 transition

Understand Super 1000 as a badminton tournament level, the four 2026 events and the announced change in 2027.

Super 1000 is a level of tournament within the BWF World Tour. It does not mean a thousand players are in the draw, a game is played to a thousand points or an event has only one thousand units of prize money.

The 2026 calendar identifies the Malaysia Open, All England Open, Indonesia Open and China Open as Super 1000 events. The specific tournament name and edition remain necessary to identify a match.

One tournament contains several separate draws

A badminton event can contain men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Each draw has its own entrants and champion. The Super 1000 label describes the event’s tour level, not one combined championship shared by all five draws.

A court session may move between those draws. A mixed doubles semi-final and a women’s singles quarter-final can therefore appear in one programme while deciding different places in different brackets.

The announced 2027 model changes the event shape

BWF’s technical-officials newsletter describes five Super 1000 tournaments from 2027, staged over eleven days across two weekends. Singles expands to forty-eight entries with group play followed by knockouts, while doubles uses a thirty-two-pair knockout draw.

These are announced changes for the new period. They should not be used to relabel the four-event 2026 calendar or to assume that an archived 2026 first-round loss occurred in a group stage.

Retain the category and draw beside the round

An informative label combines tournament, year, draw and round. “Super 1000 quarter-final” identifies a level and stage but still leaves several possible events and disciplines. Adding the tournament and draw resolves that ambiguity.

The 2027 singles group stage also makes the phase increasingly important. A group match and a knockout match can carry different elimination consequences. The full event label explains the result more precisely than the category mark alone.
