The ICC’s updated 2026 announcements set out a fourteen-team competition with a Super Series, a twelve-team group stage and a Super 7 before the semi-finals.
This current route differs from earlier Super Six descriptions. The phase name belongs with the edition; a familiar World Cup logo does not establish that an older format still applies.
Three teams begin in the Super Series
The second, third and fourth finishers from the World Cup Qualifier meet in a three-team round robin. Its winner reaches the group stage. They have qualified for the fourteen-team tournament, but only one of these three reaches the twelve-team groups.
Two groups supply seven survivors
Ten direct qualifiers, the Qualifier winner and the Super Series winner form two groups of six. The leading three from each progress, plus the better fourth-placed side across the two groups. That creates seven rather than six survivors.
The Super 7 is a complete new round robin
Each of the seven teams faces the other six, giving 21 fixtures. Group-stage points are not carried over. The leading four reach semi-finals, where first meets fourth and second meets third.
Qualifier and Super Series are different events
The preceding Qualifier selects four tournament entrants and determines their entry points. The Super Series is the opening phase of the World Cup itself. A programme can discuss qualification without being part of either group table.
| Phase | Immediate progression |
|---|---|
| Super Series | 1 of 3 to the groups |
| Two six-team groups | 7 total to Super 7 |
| Super 7 | 4 to semi-finals |
Use phase-specific standings
A strong group record does not supply Super 7 starting points. Preserve phase, teams and edition in a programme title so commentary about form can be distinguished from a current-phase mathematical advantage. This reference explains the format without reproducing a fixture timetable.
