Four initial groupsA new pair of groupsThe first-round figures stop at the boundaryHow a programme title supplies the missing contextThe ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 used a 20-team format with two successive group stages before the semi-finals and final. It was a national-team tournament, distinct from franchise T20 leagues such as the IPL or PSL.
For a recording or highlights programme from this completed edition, first round and Super Eights identify different tables. A team’s first-round record explains how it progressed, but those points do not become a head start in the next phase.
Four initial groups
The first round divided the 20 teams into four groups of five. Each team faced its four group opponents. The top two from each group advanced, creating the eight-team field for the next stage. A second-place group finish was sufficient for that progression.
A new pair of groups
The Super Eights contained two groups of four. Each team then faced three opponents, with the top two from each group reaching the semi-finals. These were fresh group contests, not an eight-team league in which everyone met everyone.
| Stage | Field and immediate objective |
|---|---|
| First round | 4 groups of 5; top 2 per group advance |
| Super Eights | 2 groups of 4; top 2 per group advance |
| Semi-finals | Winners reach the final |
| Final | Decides the tournament winner |
The first-round figures stop at the boundary
Teams began the Super Eights with zero points. First-round points, wins and net run rate were not carried forward. A commentator could discuss an unbeaten first round as form or history, but it did not supply extra points in the second table.
How a programme title supplies the missing context
Save the stage beside the countries, especially where the same opponent appears in more than one edition. A Super Eights highlights show should be read against the Super Eights table. A semi-final is a knockout fixture rather than a fourth Super Eights match. Edition-specific format information is important because the ICC has announced changes for later tournaments; this reference describes 2026.
