It introduced a 48-team finals field and an additional knockout round, so its programme labels differ from the 32-team editions that preceded it.
This is a format reference for the completed edition. It helps place a match recording or highlights programme within the tournament without treating an old fixture as an upcoming event.
Twelve groups of four
Each team played three group matches, one against each opponent in its four-team group. Twelve groups produced 72 group-stage matches. The group letter identifies one of those separate tables; it is not the same system as the single league table used in current UEFA club competitions.
A third-place finish could still advance
The top two teams in every group progressed, together with the eight best third-placed teams. That produced a 32-team knockout field. A group-stage programme could therefore have consequences both inside its own group and for the comparison between third-placed teams.
| Route out of the groups | Number of teams |
|---|---|
| Twelve group winners | 12 |
| Twelve runners-up | 12 |
| Best third-placed teams | 8 |
| Round-of-32 field | 32 |
The extra knockout round
The round of 32 came before the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. A finalist’s route contained eight matches from the start of the group stage. Older descriptions of a seven-match World Cup winning campaign do not describe this edition’s expanded route.
Reading retrospective coverage
Keep the group or knockout stage beside the fixture title when revisiting 2026. A match described as a team’s fourth game might be its round-of-32 tie rather than its last-16 appearance. A tournament highlights collection can also contain a third-place match, which is a placement match rather than another route into the final. The format explains those labels independently of any individual result.
