The Six Nations Championship brings England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales into a five-match-per-team round robin. Each team plays the other five once, producing fifteen matches across the championship.

A match’s rugby score is different from its contribution to the championship table. Bonus points and the Grand Slam award mean that counting wins alone does not fully reconstruct the standings.

The base table award

A win earns four championship points and a draw two. A defeat normally adds none, but bonus-point conditions can change the contribution. These table points are not the tries, conversions and kicks displayed on the match scoreboard.

Two match bonuses can apply

Scoring four or more tries earns a bonus point. Losing by seven match points or fewer earns a losing bonus point. A losing team satisfying both can receive two championship points from the match.

The Grand Slam has its own award

Winning all five matches is a Grand Slam and earns a further three championship points. This addition is distinct from any four-try bonus earned within an individual match. It belongs to completing the unbeaten winning championship route.

The Triple Crown is a narrower achievement

England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales wins the Triple Crown by beating the other three of those four teams. It is not another name for beating all five Six Nations opponents. A Triple Crown can therefore be discussed separately from a Grand Slam.

Keep the competition identity complete

Men’s, women’s and age-grade Six Nations programmes have separate tables and participants. Preserve the full title and year rather than merging results under a single logo. A championship position should be read using the relevant competition’s current rules.
