Why the Six Nations adds three points for a Grand Slam

Use the championship points arithmetic to see how the unbeaten five-win award differs from a try bonus or the Triple Crown.

A Six Nations Grand Slam means winning all five championship matches. The rules add three championship points for that achievement, separate from the points earned in those individual games.

The bonus is not three extra points on a match scoreboard and not a reward for beating only the other Home Unions. It belongs to the complete five-win championship route.

Build the base from five victories

Five wins at four championship points each produce twenty. Add the three-point Grand Slam award and the total becomes at least 23, before any four-try bonuses. A team does not need to score four tries in every match to earn the Grand Slam award.

The two bonuses have different triggers: one concerns tries in a particular match, while the other concerns winning every match in the championship. Their shared word bonus should not erase that distinction.

An original comparison of possible totals

Imagine fictional Team A winning all five without a try bonus. Its base twenty plus three makes 23. Imagine fictional Team B winning four with four try bonuses and losing once with both a try and narrow-loss bonus. Its total is sixteen plus four plus two, or 22.

This invented maximum-style comparison illustrates the role of the extra three points. It is not a report of a real Six Nations campaign. The actual table requires each match result and bonus award to be counted under the rules.

The match scoreboard uses another unit

A 24–20 result is a four-point winning margin on the field. The winning team’s base championship award is four regardless of that particular margin, with any try bonus considered separately. The losing side’s four-point deficit falls within the seven-point losing-bonus threshold.

Do not copy the 24 or 20 into the championship-points column. Match scores help determine result and bonus conditions, but they are not themselves the table award.

A Triple Crown does not replace the fifth win

The Triple Crown is available to England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales when it defeats the other three Home Unions. France and Italy remain additional championship opponents. Winning the Triple Crown therefore does not establish that all five fixtures were won.

A programme can discuss a Triple Crown while a Grand Slam remains undecided or has already become impossible. These are distinct achievements with different opponent sets.

Keep completed achievements separate from live possibilities

A preview may say a team is pursuing a Grand Slam before its last match. Until the fifth win is complete, that remains an objective rather than an awarded outcome. Use the current match, table and completed results together when interpreting the commentary, and preserve the competition year when revisiting a historic campaign.
