Formula One: practice, qualifying, Sprint and Grand Prix

Understand the distinct Formula 1 sessions and why a Sprint weekend has two qualifying contests.

Formula One is a single-seater motor racing world championship built around Grand Prix weekends. A weekend contains several programmes with different purposes: practice prepares the cars, qualifying establishes starting order and the Grand Prix supplies the main race result.

Selected weekends also include a Sprint. Its short race and its own qualifying session add competition; they do not replace the Grand Prix or make every session in the weekend part of one continuous race.

The standard session sequence

A standard weekend has three free-practice sessions followed by qualifying and the Grand Prix. Qualifying is divided into Q1, Q2 and Q3, progressively narrowing the field. For the 22-car 2026 field, six drivers drop out after Q1 and six more after Q2, leaving ten in Q3.

A Sprint weekend has separate qualifying targets

The 2026 Sprint structure places Sprint Qualifying after Friday’s practice. Saturday contains the Sprint and Grand Prix Qualifying, followed by the Grand Prix on Sunday. Sprint Qualifying establishes the Sprint order; Grand Prix Qualifying concerns the longer race.

The shorter race is a separate result

The Sprint is approximately 100 kilometres, rather than a full Grand Prix distance. Its result belongs to that race. A winner of Saturday’s Sprint has not thereby won Sunday’s Grand Prix, and a highlights title should preserve which race it covers.

Use the session name before the day name

Local schedules and event circumstances can vary, so Friday or Saturday alone is a weaker identifier than the named session. Save the Grand Prix round, season and programme type together. A qualifying replay and a race replay can share a venue and driver line-up while containing completely different sporting contests.
