The 2026 edition has twelve clubs in three groups of four, rather than the senior Libertadores’ eight-group field.
Its semi-final route takes the three group winners and the best runner-up across the groups. Finishing second therefore supplies a conditional comparison, not an automatic place.
The clubs arrive through national pathways
The 2026 field comprises representatives from the ten CONMEBOL member associations, the defending champion and an additional host-country representative. These are clubs with youth squads, not the associations’ national U20 teams.
Three games establish each group record
Each club meets the other three in its group once. The group winner qualifies directly for the semi-finals. The runners-up then compete for one remaining place through the cross-group ranking, so only one of the three can progress by that route.
The field changes twelve to four
Three automatic winners plus one runner-up produce four semi-finalists. The final phase also contains a third-place match. The event’s group and knockout matches are single meetings rather than the senior tournament’s familiar multi-leg assumptions.
Sub20 and under-20 identify the age category
They do not mean the twentieth edition of the event. A senior club name can appear in both senior and youth coverage while the squads and competitions remain distinct. Preserve U20 in the fixture title.
Do not confuse it with CONMEBOL’s national-team Sub20
A South American U20 championship involving countries has a separate field and format. A club such as Flamengo or Belgrano is an entrant here, while a national-team programme identifies Brazil or Argentina.

The runner-up comparison needs completed groups
An interim second-place position does not by itself secure the additional berth. The relevant group records and current competition criteria establish it. A programme previewing that possibility should not be described as confirmed qualification before the comparison is resolved.
