Copa Sudamericana: group winners and the extra play-off route

Understand why first and second in a Sudamericana group have different destinations and how Libertadores clubs join the route.

The CONMEBOL Sudamericana is a South American men’s club competition with a 32-club group-stage field in 2026. Its group winner reaches the round of 16 directly, while the runner-up faces an additional hurdle.

That hurdle is a play-off against a third-placed club from a Libertadores group. A runner-up has stayed in contention, but has not reached the same stage as the group winner yet.

First place skips the intermediate tie

The group’s leading club goes directly to the last 16. It can watch the play-off round knowing that the remaining places are being decided. The advantage is a different route rather than extra starting goals in its eventual knockout match.

Second place meets an incoming opponent

The runner-up plays a Libertadores third-placed club for a round-of-16 place. The two clubs arrive from different competitions’ group tables but meet within the Sudamericana route. Their earlier points do not become a combined score for the tie.

A group-stage transfer is not a rename

The incoming club’s Libertadores results remain Libertadores results. Its later Sudamericana fixture belongs to the new competition. A season review can discuss both parts of the journey while preserving the change of title and bracket.

Use the complete play-off name

A programme marked round-of-16 play-off concerns the tie that selects a last-16 entrant. A programme marked round of 16 concerns the subsequent round itself. Dropping play-off would move the recording one stage too far forward.

A useful two-competition watchlist

Keep the season, original group competition and current knockout competition in separate fields. A club appearing in both tournament collections has not become two different clubs. Its participation has changed context through a defined progression rule.
