AEW: weekly programmes and the Continental Classic

Separate AEW’s promotion, Dynamite and Collision programmes from an edition-specific wrestling tournament such as the Continental Classic.

All Elite Wrestling, or AEW, is a professional wrestling promotion. Dynamite and Collision are programme names within it. A named wrestling event or tournament can supply matches to those programmes while retaining its own identity.

The 2025 Continental Classic illustrates the difference. Its tournament table and qualifying rules described one specific competition inside AEW, rather than a league table covering every match on every AEW show.

Blue and Gold were tournament groups

AEW’s published 2025 format used a six-wrestler Blue League and a six-wrestler Gold League. Each entrant met the other five in their own league. A match could therefore contribute to a round-robin table before the tournament reached its final stage.

The scoring system awarded three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. Head-to-head results separated tied points. These were Continental Classic tournament points, rather than a scoring system that should be assumed for every AEW match.

Continental Rules supplied specific match conditions

The edition’s tournament matches had a twenty-minute time limit and restrictions on ringside presence and outside interference. Those conditions belonged to the named ruleset. Reading the match as an unrestricted generic wrestling contest would miss the relevance of the clock and a possible draw.

The semi-finals crossed the groups: each league winner faced the other league’s runner-up. The Blue and Gold labels therefore did not remain completely separate all the way to the championship match.

Read programme and tournament names together

A useful description preserves both the programme carrying a match and the tournament match label. The programme identifies the show; the tournament name explains why that match contributes to a particular table or bracket.

For historical material, retain the Continental Classic year. AEW’s dated 2025 format is evidence for that edition, not permission to assume identical participants, venues or rules for every later tournament. The promotion, programme, event and individual match remain distinct levels of description.
