Its official naming guide lists eighteen clubs with full names, common forms and short codes.
Those codes are useful in compact score graphics. They identify clubs rather than separate feeds or alternative teams. A guide containing Ajax and AFC Ajax has not necessarily listed two different participants.
Three fields can identify the same club
AFC Ajax, Ajax and AJA are the full, common and abbreviated forms in the league guide. PSV Eindhoven is commonly PSV and uses PSV as its code. Feyenoord Rotterdam is commonly Feyenoord with FEY. Preserve those relationships when matching a programme to a fixture.
Similar places do not merge clubs
Excelsior Rotterdam, Feyenoord and Sparta Rotterdam share the city of Rotterdam but remain separate clubs. A city name by itself can therefore be less precise than the club code or full name. The actual participant identity should come before a local geography assumption.
A revised kickoff keeps its matchday
The 2026/27 official programme records date and time changes after the initial release. A fixture can move within a scheduling window while retaining its round and opponents. An earlier programme listing is not the final authority on the later kickoff.
Dutch football contains separate competition identities
Eredivisie league matches and domestic cup matches have different consequences. A familiar club abbreviation does not establish the competition; the same club can appear in both. Keep the league title beside the opponent pair.
Useful examples from the official naming guide
The following are identity mappings rather than a standings table or a claim about current form.
| Full or common club | Short code |
|---|---|
| AFC Ajax / Ajax | AJA |
| Feyenoord Rotterdam / Feyenoord | FEY |
| FC Groningen | GRO |
| N.E.C. Nijmegen | NEC |
| sc Heerenveen | HEE |
Use season and fixture for an archive search
A repeated club pairing can belong to different years or rounds. Once the abbreviation is resolved, add season, opponent and programme type. This makes a compact scoreboard searchable without treating a spelling variant as another team.
