Rakuten Viki: programmes, community subtitles and Timed Comments

Separate Viki’s subtitle tracks, viewer comments and membership scope when choosing an episode.

Rakuten Viki combines streamed programmes with a community subtitle process and optional Timed Comments. These are three different layers: the programme you can access, the translated text available for that episode and viewers’ reactions anchored to moments in the video.

Check the episode and region before membership

Find the exact series, season and episode under the intended viewing location. Viki’s help explicitly says Pass does not remove geographic restrictions. A subscription offer and a title unavailable in your region should not be treated as a problem solved automatically by upgrading.

A hypothetical viewer considering Pass for one drama should confirm that drama’s local offer first. A recommendation from another country is useful for discovery, while the actual episode page answers the availability question.

Subtitle availability and preferences are separate

Viki describes community-created subtitles whose completion can vary by programme and contributor availability. Its help says the same subtitles are available to Pass and non-Pass viewers; paying does not make an unfinished language track complete.

The subtitle-settings guide describes an account preference and per-video choices. Use the intended language on the actual episode and inspect its available completion information. A saved preference chooses among offered tracks; it does not create one that is absent.

Timed Comments are viewer reactions

Timed Comments let signed-in viewers attach comments to a point in the video. They can be shown or hidden independently of the programme’s subtitles. Read them as audience reactions rather than a translation or a caption track.

For a hypothetical drama evening, someone who wants a clear subtitle area can turn comments off while keeping the chosen subtitle language. Another viewer may enjoy the audience conversation. The appropriate choice concerns the overlay, not the episode’s membership status.

Keep the exact episode, available subtitle language and viewing region with any support note. If a text overlay is the problem, identify whether it is a subtitle or a Timed Comment before changing account, language or player settings.
