An iPad or iPad Pro family name alone does not identify whether it uses Lightning or USB-C, which adapter fits or whether an extended workspace is supported.
Apple documents mirroring, app-specific second-screen behavior and external workspace on supported models. Those are different capabilities; a display connection does not automatically enable all three.
Start with the connector and model
Use the model’s support record to select a compatible display adapter or cable. Apple’s wired guide gives separate Lightning and USB-C routes. Match the television or monitor’s input to that connection, then select the correct input on the display.
A USB-C connector can carry charging and data while display behavior still depends on the model and accessory. Do not purchase an adapter solely because its plug looks right.
Resolution and frame rate are model-specific
Apple’s USB-C iPad documentation lists different maximum resolutions and refresh rates across generations. For example, some supported HDMI arrangements are limited to 4K at 30 Hz while other models can use 4K at 60 Hz. “USB-C iPad” is too broad to select one limit.
These are output capabilities under supported conditions. A lower-resolution source does not become native 4K because the tablet sends a 4K signal. The app and connected equipment also determine available video and audio behavior.
Choose the display mode for the task
Mirroring reproduces the tablet view. A supported media app may instead place its video on the connected screen while leaving controls on the iPad. An extended workspace lets supported models move applications onto another display.
If a guide begins with an external-workspace feature absent on your model, switch to the model’s documented route rather than searching for the same setting indefinitely. Picture in Picture is yet another feature: it places a small video window on the iPad and is not the same as extending a desktop.
Keep the player and account in view
Use an iPad-compatible app from the appropriate distribution route and check its external-display behavior. A cable does not transfer a player licence or authorize another service connection. For support, name the model, iPadOS version, player, adapter and intended mode. This explains much more than saying that an iPad is attached to a TV.
