Amazon’s current device references include both Android-based Fire OS and Vega OS hardware. Identify the complete model and year before selecting installation instructions.
A remote, the word 4K or a familiar Home screen is not enough to identify the application runtime. Amazon’s exact device entry and the installed system information are better evidence.
Read the family and generation together
The original Fire TV boxes from 2014, 2015 and 2017 are separate from the stick family. Cube generations from 2018, 2019 and 2022 have their own specification page. Keep this distinction when checking ports, accessories and supported software.
The stick references also distinguish 2014 and 2016–2019 models, Basic Edition (2017), third generation (2020), Lite (2020) and HD with Alexa Voice Remote (2024). Older product names should not be treated as promises that a current app still supports their operating-system level.
The recent 4K names need particular care
Amazon’s current platform table identifies these separate branches. This table records runtime family rather than a fixed latest firmware number.
| Model reference | Application platform |
|---|---|
| Fire TV Stick 4K, 1st gen 2018 | Fire OS |
| Fire TV Stick 4K, 2nd gen 2023 | Fire OS |
| Fire TV Stick 4K Max, 1st gen 2021 / 2nd gen 2023 | Fire OS; different hardware generations |
| Fire TV Stick 4K Plus, 2025 | Fire OS |
| Fire TV Stick 4K Select, 2025 | Vega OS |
| Fire TV Stick 4K, 3rd gen 2026 / Fire TV Stick HD, 2026 | Vega OS |
Use the platform result to choose the next step
Amazon explicitly says Fire OS APKs do not run on Vega. A player developer must supply an appropriate platform build. Repeating an Android download or changing its filename does not bridge that boundary.
For a Fire OS unit, still check the app’s device and software requirements. An Android basis does not guarantee compatibility with every Android package, Google-dependent component or touch interface. Use the current device catalogue result or developer-supported distribution route.
Keep model identity in your support note
Write the retail name, generation or release year, build model if available, installed system and player version. Do not publish a device serial number or private service credentials to establish these details.
Hardware capability and account authorization remain separate. A 4K or Max label cannot establish the source resolution, player licence or provider connection allowance. Use the exact model entry to select a suitable player first; discuss the service account in that player’s terms.
