Current guidance uses Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity > Automatically AirPlay, with Never, Ask and Automatic choices.
This preference controls supported connection behavior. It does not make every video app support AirPlay or turn an audio-only receiver into a video display.
Choose how destinations are selected
| Preference | Behavior described by Apple |
|---|---|
| Never | Choose an AirPlay destination manually |
| Ask | Receive a suggestion and choose whether to connect |
| Automatic | Allow supported suggested/automatic connections to familiar destinations |
Review the setting in context
Open the AirPlay & Continuity settings and choose the behavior appropriate to the shared space. If the aim is to avoid an unexpected TV destination, manual selection or an explicit prompt gives a deliberate choice.
Apple describes same-network requirements for its documented workflow and same-account conditions for certain automatic/suggested connections to Apple TV or HomePod. Use the current guide for the sending device rather than assuming every receiver follows identical conditions.
Know which sharing control is active
AirPlay video inside a supported app sends the selected video. Screen Mirroring in Control Center shares the device display. AirPlay audio selects an audio destination. Check the active route before showing private screens or changing a programme’s output.
If full-screen mirroring is on, notifications or account fields can appear on the television. End mirroring through its control when that task is finished. An audio destination icon is not evidence that the phone is mirroring its screen.
Check a known supported app
After changing the automatic-connection preference, use a supported app and inspect the selected destination before playback. If the desired receiver is absent, investigate receiver compatibility and the network separately from the preference.
Apple notes that some video apps do not support AirPlay. A setting allowing automatic connections cannot add that feature to an unrelated player. For Dream 4K, confirm the chosen player’s supported route and service method.
Keep the outcome specific: whether a suggestion appeared, whether the correct destination was selected and whether the intended video or audio played. A support request should name the sender, receiver, app and active sharing mode. This is more useful than treating every AirPlay icon as the same universal function.
