State exactly what the rate includesUse consistent decimal and binary unitsAllow for adaptation and variationA bit-rate figure can support a useful data-use estimate, provided its scope is clear. A video-only rate omits audio and other traffic, while an adaptive session may not remain at one operating point for its whole duration.
The worked calculation below is hypothetical. It is not a measured consumption figure for a service, a device or a particular programme.
State exactly what the rate includes
Assume an original example with video averaging 5 Mbit/s and audio averaging 0.2 Mbit/s for two hours. The combined media payload rate is 5.2 Mbit/s, and two hours is 7,200 seconds. Multiplying gives 37,440 megabits; dividing by eight gives 4,680 decimal megabytes, or 4.68 GB.
This estimate excludes packaging and network overhead, subtitles, retries, unrelated app traffic and any rate changes. Those exclusions are part of the result, not reasons to present the number as an exact account-meter reading.
Use consistent decimal and binary units
One byte contains eight bits. Decimal gigabytes use one billion bytes, while a tool reporting binary gibibytes uses a different divisor. Keep the unit a tool actually displays rather than calling both GB and assuming identical values.
If only a video rate is known, report a video-payload estimate and leave the other tracks unresolved. If the given number already includes audio, adding audio again would double-count it. A manifest bandwidth declaration may also have a peak-related meaning rather than a programme-long measured average.
Allow for adaptation and variation
For an adaptive session, divide the estimate into known intervals at each actual selected rate if those observations exist. Otherwise use clearly labelled scenarios rather than inventing a constant selection. A higher-resolution menu option does not prove that the player used it throughout.
A useful planning statement says: “Under the stated constant-average assumptions, combined media payload is approximately 4.68 decimal GB before additional traffic.” It does not promise a fixed data allowance requirement or infer a subscription’s billing rules. For a real usage question, compare the device or network meter’s scope and interval with the session, recognizing that its total can include more than media payload.
| Original example input or step | Value |
|---|---|
| Video average | 5 Mbit/s |
| Audio average | 0.2 Mbit/s |
| Combined media average | 5.2 Mbit/s |
| Duration | 7200 seconds |
| Combined payload | 5.2 × 7200 / 8 = 4680 MB |
| Decimal volume | 4.68 GB before additional traffic |
