403, 404, 429 or 503: what to record for a stream — illustrated reference table

A player reporting 403, 404, 429 or 503 has more specific evidence than a spinner alone. Each response means something different, and its resource role matters. A failed entry playlist is not the same dependency as a failed subtitle file or an expired old live segment.

Record the response before repeatedly retrying. The purpose is to preserve what the serving system actually said and which part of playback it affected.

Associate the status with a resource

Record whether the response belongs to login/account access, an entry playlist, selected rendition, initialization section or media segment. Add observation time, player version and whether surrounding requests succeeded. Redact secret query values and authorization data.

In an original hypothetical chain, the playlist returns 200, initialization returns 200 and the next video segment returns 404. That is a resource-specific failure. It does not establish that the account, every channel or the entire network is unavailable.

Use the status to choose the next question

For 403, preserve the refusal and any safe explanation, then use the documented account/support route; do not assume the exact reason. For 404, compare the resource with the current playlist and live-window position. For 429, stop rapid manual retries and follow documented rate/retry guidance. For 503, preserve any Retry-After field and the affected scope.

A signed URL may have a limited lifetime, but a 403 alone does not prove expiry. Obtain a fresh permitted session through the normal application if appropriate rather than editing tokens or bypassing access controls. Likewise, retrying a resource that has permanently left a live window will not recreate it.

Include response shape and absence honestly

A 200 carrying HTML rather than expected media is a separate useful finding. A timeout before any response should be reported as a timeout, not assigned an invented HTTP code. DNS and TLS errors also belong to earlier stages.

A concise report can list resource role, status, timestamp, current playlist association and one controlled retry outcome. If only one observation exists, say that. This gives support evidence for access, publishing, rate or temporary-availability investigation while avoiding claims that the response cannot establish.
