World Rallycross: archive identity and the 2026 transition

Understand the difference between World RX history, the current European championship and the separate Rallycross World Cup.

World Rallycross Championship identifies the international series known as World RX in its championship era. From 2026, the FIA’s top rallycross series transitions to the European Rallycross Championship, with a separate single-event Rallycross World Cup.

These names should not be merged into a single current championship. The supplied World RX identity remains useful for archive programmes, while current coverage needs the formal competition name and edition.

Rallycross is not a WRC special stage

Rallycross uses wheel-to-wheel racing on mixed-surface circuits. The World Rally Championship instead builds a rally from separately timed special stages. Shared rally wording does not imply the same racing task or programme structure.

The 2026 series is European

The FIA approved the 2026 European championship programme after announcing the change. Its title and competition status differ from the former World Championship, even where venues and drivers remain familiar. A calendar listing should preserve Euro RX rather than silently retaining World Championship wording.

The World Cup is a separate event

The inaugural World Cup’s published format is a single event with quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. Its eight-car semi-finals and final differ from assumptions based on older World RX formats. A world title at that event is not a season-long European points title.

A joker lap belongs to a defined race format

Rallycross coverage can discuss the alternative joker route as part of race strategy. The event’s current sporting conditions establish how it is used; an old graphic should not be treated as a universal lap rule for every later series.

Use three distinct archive labels

World RX archive, Euro RX 2026 and Rallycross World Cup describe different competition contexts.

Keep the original season on historic material

An older World Championship final remains a World Championship programme from its own year. The transition does not rename that historic result, and the historic logo does not establish a new World Championship season in 2026.
