The League of Legends World Championship, usually called Worlds, brings professional teams from regional leagues into one international esports tournament. Its 2026 format has Play-In, Swiss and knockout stages with different advancement rules.

A team’s position therefore needs its stage beside it. One Play-In loss, one Swiss loss and one knockout-series loss do not have the same tournament consequence.

The Play-In supplies one Swiss place

Nineteen teams qualify for the 2026 event. Four contest the Play-In, a best-of-five double-elimination bracket, and one advances to join the other fifteen teams in the sixteen-team Swiss field.

Double elimination describes the bracket’s loss structure. Best of five describes the series between two opponents. A team can lose an individual game within a series without losing that series, so these two labels should not be collapsed into one.

Three Swiss wins advance; three losses eliminate

In the Swiss stage, teams seek three match wins and are eliminated at three match losses. From the second round, opponents are drawn from teams with the same record, without repeat matchups. Same-region opponents become possible after Round 1.

A 2–2 record is therefore unresolved: the next match sends one team to three wins and the other to three losses. It does not mean two individual games have been won within a best-of-five series. The record belongs to the stage.

The knockouts use best-of-five series

The remaining eight teams enter quarter-finals, followed by semi-finals and the final. These knockout series are best of five, so three game wins take the series. A 2–0 lead is strong but does not yet complete that format.

For a programme guide, keep stage, opponents and game number together. “Swiss Round 5” and “quarter-final Game 5” count different things: one is a round in the stage, while the other is a potentially deciding game inside a single series.
