The Volleyball Nations League, or VNL, is a national-team volleyball competition with separate women’s and men’s tournaments. The 2026 format has eighteen teams in each, rather than one combined competition.

Its preliminary phase moves between weekly pools at different venues. Those pools organise the matches for that week; qualification is determined by the overall preliminary ranking, with a guaranteed berth for the Finals host.

Three weeks contribute to one preliminary record

Each team plays twelve preliminary matches across three competition weeks. Each week has three six-team pools at three venues. A team’s week-one pool is consequently a programme grouping, rather than a permanent group whose top two independently advance.

To understand a qualification position, read the overall VNL table for the relevant women’s or men’s competition. A local pool label tells you where that week’s matches were organised, not the entire advancement rule.

Eight teams enter the direct-elimination phase

The Final Eight quarter-finals pair first against eighth, second against seventh, third against sixth and fourth against fifth in the Finals ranking. The Finals host’s guaranteed place must be considered when reading the qualifying field.

A quarter-final loss ends the route to the title. The winners progress to semi-finals; semi-final winners play for gold, while the defeated semi-finalists contest bronze. A bronze-medal match is therefore a separate final-stage result, rather than another chance to reach the title match.

Match, week and Finals are different labels

A VNL programme can identify one national-team match, a venue’s weekly session or a match from the Final Eight. Those descriptions have different scopes even when the competition logo is identical.

For an archived listing, keep the gender competition, two teams and phase together. A preliminary result contributes to the multiweek record. A quarter-final result has an immediate elimination consequence. The phase explains why the same score can carry different tournament meaning.
