Understand the Top 14’s 26-round season, playoff entry points and bonus rules that differ from other rugby leagues.

Top 14 is France’s top professional men’s rugby union league. Fourteen clubs play home and away, giving each 26 league fixtures. The leading six enter a final phase that awards the Bouclier de Brennus.

The six qualifiers do not all start at the same stage. First and second go directly to the semi-finals, while third through sixth play the barrages. This makes league position within the six meaningful.

The barrages select two semi-finalists

Third plays sixth and fourth plays fifth, hosted by the higher-ranked club. The winners join the leading two in the semi-finals. Barrage here is a playoff stage, not the English-language idea of repeated attacking pressure.

The final phase changes venue context

The semi-finals are staged at a neutral venue under the league’s programme, followed by the final. The host pattern differs from the earlier barrages, so a higher league position does not imply every knockout match takes place at that club’s home ground.

French bonus thresholds are specific

A Top 14 attacking bonus requires at least three more tries than the opponent. The defensive bonus requires losing by five match points or fewer. These are not the four-try and seven-point thresholds familiar from several other rugby competitions.

The number fourteen identifies clubs

Top 14 does not mean fourteen players on each side or fourteen rounds. It names the league field. Thirteen opponents played twice produce 26 matches for each club.

Keep domestic and European identities separate

French clubs also compete in EPCR tournaments. A familiar club pairing does not establish whether a programme is Top 14 or European rugby. Preserve competition, season and stage, especially where French-language round labels are shortened in a guide.
