The 16-driver Chase field is selected through regular-season points rather than an automatic win-and-you’re-in route.
This effective-season change matters when watching older programmes. References to elimination rounds or a Championship 4 can describe an earlier system; they should not be used as the explanation of the 2026 Cup title contest.
The regular season selects the Chase field
The Cup regular season contains 26 races. Its points standings determine the sixteen Chase entrants and their seeding. A race victory is valuable for its points, but it no longer automatically guarantees a place in that field.
A single reset before ten title races
The Chase field is reseeded once after the regular season. The top seed begins on 2,100 points, second on 2,075 and third on 2,065, followed by five-point steps. The regular-season leader therefore carries a seeded advantage rather than every qualifier beginning level.
No elimination rounds inside the Chase
The 2026 Chase does not remove drivers after successive rounds. The ten-race sequence builds the final points outcome. A difficult early Chase race can damage a contender’s total without automatically eliminating that driver under a round cut.
Race points and title context still differ
A 2026 race win pays 55 points, while stage points remain part of the scoring. A stage win is not the same as winning the race, and a race win is not the same as leading the championship.

Cup, O’Reilly and Truck programmes have different field sizes and Chase lengths. Preserve Cup Series in a title before applying this guide. The same NASCAR meeting can contain several series, and a shared circuit does not make their championship paths identical.
