Its programme comprised eight sports, sixteen disciplines and 116 medal events. Those counts describe different levels of the Games, rather than conflicting estimates of the same thing.
A programme title becomes much more useful when it includes the discipline and event. “Winter Olympics” is the umbrella; a named event identifies which medals or qualification places were at stake.
A discipline can contain several medal events
Ski mountaineering made its Olympic debut with men’s and women’s sprints and a mixed relay. One discipline therefore supplied several separate medal contests. A relay result was not an extra round of either individual sprint.
Other additions included women’s doubles in luge, mixed-team skeleton, dual moguls in freestyle skiing and team combined in alpine skiing. The event name identifies the actual contest within the broader discipline.
The venue was part of the event’s identity
Competition was spread across northern Italian clusters. Milan staged ice disciplines, while Cortina and other mountain locations staged different snow and sliding contests. “Milano Cortina” did not mean every event took place in one arena.
This explains why programmes could overlap across disciplines. A session in one venue could proceed while a different event was under way elsewhere. A whole-Games highlights programme may bring those separate contests together, whereas an event programme follows a narrower sequence.
A session does not necessarily award a medal
The terms heat, qualification, semi-final and final describe stages within individual competitions. Some sessions advance athletes; others produce the medal result. The word “Olympic” alone does not identify which stage a recording contains.
For a 2026 archive, preserve the discipline, full event name and stage together. An individual, team or mixed event should retain that descriptor because it identifies a different medal competition, even when athletes or venues overlap.
