IndyCar Series: track types and qualifying formats

A reference to IndyCar’s road, street and oval events, including the distinct Indianapolis 500 qualifying programme.

The IndyCar Series contests races on road courses, temporary street circuits and ovals. The same championship therefore uses more than one qualifying procedure. A session title is easiest to understand when paired with the track type and event.

The Indianapolis 500 has its own qualifying programme. It should not be treated as a generic example of every IndyCar oval weekend, even though it belongs to the same championship.

Road and street qualifying narrows the field

The normal road/street process begins with two groups, with six from each moving to the next segment. The resulting twelve then compete for six places in the Firestone Fast Six. That final session orders the leading six, including pole.

Ordinary ovals use consecutive timed laps

Outside the Indianapolis 500 procedure, an oval attempt normally uses two consecutive timed laps. The combined time establishes the qualifying performance. Certain oval double-headers use the individual laps to establish the two separate grids, so the event instructions matter.

Indianapolis uses four timed laps

An Indianapolis 500 attempt uses four timed laps. Its pole-selection process is event-specific. For 2026, INDYCAR initially announced an additional Final 15 stage before the Top 12 and Firestone Fast Six.

Rain then forced an abbreviated procedure: the initial attempts sent the fastest twelve directly to Top 12 qualifying, followed by the Fast Six. The later weather revision superseded the earlier plan. An archived programme should retain its session date and stage so the planned and revised processes are not confused.

Keep practice, qualifying and race separate

Practice speed can help explain form but does not automatically establish a starting position. A Fast Six programme is qualifying rather than a six-car race. Save the season, venue, track type and named session when organising coverage. These details prevent the rules from one kind of track being carried into an event with a different procedure.
