The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship brings prototypes and production-derived GT cars into shared-track sports-car races. Its four classes are GTP, LMP2, GTD PRO and GTD.

Those class labels identify the car’s direct competitive field. A race can produce several class winners, so the overall running order is only one view of what is happening. Timing graphics and the car’s position display help distinguish the contests.

Two broad car styles, four class names

GTP and LMP2 are prototype categories. GTD PRO and GTD use the GT3-based GT framework with different class contexts. Sharing a recognisable road-car shape does not establish that two GT entries belong to the same class.

Class position travels with the entry

IMSA uses an LED position display on the car to help identify its place in its respective class. A displayed five means fifth within the relevant class context, not automatically fifth overall. Read the class cue with the number rather than reading the number in isolation.

Qualifying and race order are related but separate

Qualifying establishes the starting order. Prototypes and GT entries have their own qualifying context, while the GT starting order can mix GTD PRO and GTD cars according to qualifying performance. A car near another on the grid is therefore not necessarily a direct class rival.

Keep car number, class and driver together

Endurance entries use driver crews, so the driver shown at one moment can change while the car’s race continues. The number and class are stable anchors for following the entry across stints.

Event coverage can contain several championships

A meeting can include support-series programmes as well as the WeatherTech race. Preserve the complete series title before comparing a car or result. Similar circuits and sports-car shapes do not make every programme on the weekend the same championship.
