It includes EFL and Premier League clubs and is distinct from the FA Cup despite many of the same teams appearing in both.
Its round sequence changes match structure at the semi-finals. The 2026/27 programme contains a first and second semi-final leg, followed by a separate final. Those are three different match identities, not repeated labels for one recording.
Entry is staggered
Clubs do not all begin in the same round. The EFL’s competition information places Premier League entrants later than the opening round, with European participants arriving later still under the entry arrangements. A club’s first appearance is therefore not necessarily Round One of the competition.
The semi-finals use two matches
Each semi-final pairing is played home and away. The current match score and the tie’s aggregate position must be read separately. A team can lead the second leg but remain behind across the tie.
The final is another stage
The two semi-final winners reach a neutral-ground final. First leg and second leg belong to the preceding ties; the final is not a third leg between the same clubs. Its result decides the cup rather than merely producing another finalist.
A draw programme is not a drawn match
Cup draw coverage selects pairings for a round. A drawn match is a score outcome. The word draw therefore needs its programme context before it can tell you whether the recording contains played football.
| Listing | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Round draw | Pairing announcement |
| Semi-final first leg | Opening part of a two-match tie |
| Semi-final second leg | Completion of that tie |
| Final | Cup-deciding fixture |
Preserve EFL Cup rather than generic cup
A club may play league, FA Cup and Carabao Cup programmes in the same month. Competition, season and stage identify which route the result affects. The familiar team logo alone cannot distinguish those separate contests.
