It can be packaged and published before its parent segment is complete. EXT-X-PART identifies partial-segment entries in the playlist under the extension’s rules.
Partial duration is media time, not a complete event-to-screen latency measurement. The system still has capture, processing, delivery and presentation stages.
Parent and partial units describe the same timeline at different granularity
An original simplified example divides a three-second parent interval into ten 0.3-second parts. Ten times 0.3 equals three seconds of media. The shorter publication unit can become useful before the entire parent is finished, but this arithmetic does not establish a 0.3-second end-to-end live delay.
Actual playlists need valid media structure, timing and the appropriate client/server support. Parts are not arbitrary slices of a file made by a viewer; the publisher creates conforming media units.
Timing and independence need context
A part entry can carry information relevant to its use, and not every point necessarily serves as an independent decoder start. Initialization, keyframes and the current media context still matter. A part being listed does not prove the player can begin from any byte without prerequisites.
| Quantity | Original example |
|---|---|
| Parent media duration | 3 seconds |
| Part duration | 0.3 seconds |
| Illustrative part count | 10 |
| Request transfer time | A separate measured quantity |
| End-to-end delay | Not established by these durations alone |
Use part-level evidence without losing the parent context
For a failure, preserve the part’s parent sequence context, its timing, request outcome and applicable initialization information. A later completed segment can contain the same media interval, so counting both as independent additional programme duration would be wrong.
Do not infer a provider’s server speed, network minimum or client compatibility from short durations alone. The practical observation is whether the supported player received usable parts before its deadlines and maintained the intended timeline.
