MUBI: the film database, Now Showing and curated streaming

Distinguish a MUBI film record or essay from the current selection you can actually stream.

MUBI combines curated streaming with a much broader film database and film writing through Notebook. A film page can identify and discuss a work without offering that work to stream at the moment. Use the current viewing selection when deciding what to watch.

A database record is not a playback offer

MUBI’s help explicitly explains that its database aims to catalogue films beyond those currently available on the service. Treat a record as information about a work until the page presents the relevant viewing action. A rating, review or filmography entry is useful context rather than proof of entitlement.

A hypothetical viewer following an actor’s filmography may discover an unavailable film alongside one currently streaming. Preserve the title for future discovery, but choose the evening’s programme from the actual local viewing offer.

Now Showing provides the current selection

MUBI directs viewers to Now Showing and current search for available films, including curated thematic groups and new additions. Use a collection as an entry point, then open the exact film. A curator’s theme can guide exploration without replacing the individual work’s description.

For a hypothetical film evening, start with two or three available candidates and inspect their subject, runtime and offered language information. This creates a practical choice without treating a list of admired films as a ready-made streaming playlist.

Keep film culture and viewing products distinct

Notebook explores cinema through writing; MUBI’s distribution activity and GO cinema benefit concern other ways films reach audiences. A review or theatrical association does not automatically establish an at-home stream. GO should be checked through its own eligible membership and venue conditions.

Language presentation also varies by market. Inspect the film and the current local offer instead of assuming every title has the same audio or subtitle options. A website language preference is useful navigation context but not a title-level track guarantee.

Keep the film title, current viewing action and date checked in a short watchlist. If availability changes, return to Now Showing or search rather than treating the remaining database record as a broken play button.
