New Zealand television includes general channel brands, an Indigenous broadcaster and digital programme destinations. Current distribution matters: a channel remembered from an older television guide may now have a different access route.

TVNZ channel names and TVNZ+

TVNZ’s own help identifies TVNZ 1, TVNZ 2 and DUKE within its live-channel offering. TVNZ+ also contains additional streaming channels and on-demand programmes. A digital destination and one of its individual channels are therefore different levels of the reference.

When locating a series, use the exact title and episode. When following a live channel, keep the full channel name. A programme tile inside TVNZ+ is not automatically an assertion that the title is currently playing on TVNZ 1.

Whakaata Māori has an Indigenous broadcasting role

Whakaata Māori identifies itself as Aotearoa New Zealand’s Indigenous broadcaster. Its language and cultural purpose is distinct from a broad country or general-entertainment label. A viewer seeking te reo Māori content should retain the original programme title rather than asking only for New Zealand television.

A programme about Māori culture and a programme spoken entirely in te reo Māori are not the same attribute. Specify the spoken-language need separately from the subject, and check subtitle options for the particular programme.

Te Reo is a distribution-change example

Whakaata Māori’s official strategic statement announced a transition of the Te Reo channel to online-only distribution from March 2025. An older terrestrial channel list should therefore not be used as if it settles current reception.

This is a practical reason to keep an official current programme or service link with a favourite. A familiar brand can continue while its distribution changes. The correct response is to resolve the current service, not assume that the old remote-control position still identifies it.

Identify the purpose of a local request

For news, distinguish a national bulletin from a named regional or Indigenous current-affairs programme. For children’s viewing, retain both the show and desired language. For sport, use the dated event announcement.

Those details establish which content is intended. They do not establish access through an unrelated subscription, international programme rights or matching language options in another player.
