PBS and Passport: free videos and a local-station member benefit

Check the individual video first

PBS’s help says many programmes can be watched without a fee or account, including some new episodes for limited periods. Other items are marked for Passport. Inspect the video’s actual offer rather than infer that every episode of a show has the same access window.

A hypothetical viewer may find one current episode available freely and an older one marked for Passport. That is a selected-video access distinction, not evidence that the free app itself has become a paid download.

The station sets membership eligibility

Participating local PBS stations set their own qualifying support requirements. Use the actual station’s membership page for eligibility rather than quote one universal donation amount. A donation confirmation and a completed Passport activation are separate steps.

PBS’s setup guide describes station processing and activation before sign-in. If an existing supporter has not activated the benefit, use the official lookup or station instructions rather than assume another donation is the missing action.

The linked account is the viewing key

After activation, use the same account and sign-in method linked to Passport. PBS describes an icon beside the signed-in identity to show that the benefit is recognised. A different email or sign-in choice can open a valid account without the expected benefit.

For a household record, keep the station, activation state and intended sign-in method together, without storing the password in the viewing instructions. That distinguishes a local membership question from a player problem.
