On 2020 and later webOS sets, the documented route uses All Settings > Support > Software Update. Older webOS sets use General > About This TV.
This updates the television’s software. It is separate from installing or updating a native player in the app catalogue.
Start with a model and version note
Record the complete model and installed software version. Menu names can vary, and LG’s general guide tells readers to expect model differences. Use the specific model support page if the television does not match the illustrated path.
Keep the TV powered and connected during the update. LG warns that interrupting power or internet access during the operation can cause a system error. Choose a time when the update can finish without interrupting planned viewing.
Use the documented era branch
| Television era | Network-update path in LG’s guide |
|---|---|
| 2020 and later, webOS 5.0 and later | Settings > All Settings > Support > Software Update > Check for Updates |
| 2019 and earlier, webOS 4.5 and earlier | Settings > All Settings > General > About This TV > Check for Updates |
| Older NetCast sets | Follow the separate Smart/Home > Settings > Support update instructions for that model |
Keep USB maintenance separate
LG also documents a USB firmware method using the exact model’s downloaded firmware and an LG_DTV folder. Do not use another model’s file or treat an Android package as television firmware.
If a USB update is necessary, follow the current LG model guide for file type, drive preparation and screen prompts. Formatting a drive is a separate change to its files and needs preparation. A generic app-install tutorial is not an adequate firmware guide.
Check the intended player after completion
Allow any normal restart to finish, then open the same player and repeat the specific action you were investigating. Record its app version independently from webOS. Updating two layers at once makes a change harder to explain.
If the TV offers no update, note that result. It is not evidence that a third-party download should be forced onto the set. If one app still fails, check that app’s current model support and the exact error.
A firmware update does not renew a service term, buy a player licence or add missing programme tracks. Direct a TV-update failure to LG with the model and error. Direct an app or account issue to the relevant developer/provider with the player identity and stage that fails.
