A preload hint helps a supported client ask for upcoming media early. It is not the same state as an EXT-X-PART entry confirming the published partial segment and its context. Plans can change as the presentation is packaged.

When an anticipated request looks unusual, preserve what was hinted and what the next actual playlist published. A single early request is incomplete evidence.

Record the hint and its role

Identify whether the hint concerns media or initialization information and note its resource/byte-range context. Keep the request’s eventual outcome and timing. A request waiting for future availability differs from a failed request for media already listed as current.

In an original hypothetical sequence, a client anticipates the next part, then the following playlist introduces a discontinuity and a new initialization section before the published media. The final context matters; the earlier hint did not authorize ignoring those changes.

Compare the actual published entry

Check whether the hinted resource appears as a part, whether its surrounding context changed or whether the packager selected another segmentation plan. Apple’s documentation explicitly allows some planned hints not to be published after a plan change. That is not a universal excuse for every error; it identifies which state needs comparison.

If the final playlist currently references a resource that fails, report that direct association. If only the hint existed, describe it as an anticipated-resource observation. The two reports support different source-side questions.

Keep the supported flow intact

Do not manually mutate private URLs or issue rapid requests to force early availability. A viewer cannot produce missing media through retries. For developer-controlled tests, follow the current protocol and server configuration requirements rather than treating a hint as a static file promise.

A useful report includes the hint, pending/failure outcome, subsequent playlist context and player error, with secrets removed. It can distinguish expected anticipation, changed publication and an actual failed dependency. Avoid turning the result into a fixed delay claim or a broad accusation about all media on the service.

  1. Identify the hinted resource role and request result.
  2. Preserve the next published playlist context.
  3. Distinguish hint-only from currently listed media.
  4. Report the actual state transition with time and redaction.
