WIB, WITA and WIT describe different clocks, so copying only “20:00” can lose information that matters to a viewer elsewhere in Indonesia or abroad.
Indonesia’s national time authority, BMKG, publishes the three-zone reference. It provides a reliable basis for a calculation, while the broadcaster’s schedule establishes which transmission is being calculated.
The three references
BMKG identifies western Indonesian time as UTC+7, central Indonesian time as UTC+8 and eastern Indonesian time as UTC+9. Its national time page associates the western zone with places including Java and Sumatra, the central zone with Bali and other central regions, and the eastern zone with Maluku and Papua.
The abbreviation is therefore part of the programme time, not optional decoration. Keep the broadcaster’s actual reference rather than assigning a zone from a broad country label.
An illustrative simultaneous event
This example uses an invented programme. Suppose a broadcaster explicitly announces a simultaneous event at 20:00 WIB. The same instant is 21:00 WITA and 22:00 WIT, based on BMKG’s published zone relationship.
The word simultaneous is essential. If a regional station independently schedules an evening repeat at 20:00 local time, that is another transmission arrangement. A conversion of one live instant cannot predict every regional repeat.
A second example crosses the calendar date
For another invented simultaneous event, 23:30 WIB corresponds to 00:30 WITA and 01:30 WIT on the following calendar day. A viewer searching only the original date in an eastern guide could therefore miss the relevant listing.
Record the local date after conversion, not just the changed hour. This is particularly useful when sharing a programme time with relatives in different regions. The programme can be the same event even though the calendar date displayed locally differs.
Regional TVRI identity is a separate question
TVRI identifies its national service and maintains official records for regional stations. A regional programme difference is not automatically a zone-conversion problem. First establish the exact station and programme.
If the desired content is a local bulletin, choosing another region’s feed and adjusting the clock will not create the intended local edition. The station determines the editorial content; the zone determines how a transmission time is expressed.
A complete schedule note
- Save the original programme title, service and transmission date.
- Keep WIB, WITA, WIT or the exact reference printed by the broadcaster.
- Confirm whether the listing describes a simultaneous live event or a local schedule.
- Convert the same instant for the viewing location.
- Carry any midnight date change into the final note.
Keep evidence roles separate
BMKG establishes the clock relationship. A broadcaster establishes the programme and transmission. Neither source alone establishes access through an unrelated subscription. Using both appropriately produces a clearer reference without inventing a national all-purpose programme time.
