If a selected video seems unexpectedly short or opens as a discussion, inspect its item identity before treating playback as incomplete. You may have chosen a supplement rather than the feature.
Read the label beside the item
Open the film page or curated collection and distinguish Films from Supplements where shown. Criterion’s official FAQ describes those supporting formats, and current film pages list them as individual items. The title of a discussion may include the film’s name without being the film itself.
For an explicitly hypothetical example, a viewer looking for a two-hour feature opens a twenty-minute filmmaker interview. A clean ending at that interview’s listed duration would be different from the feature stopping unexpectedly after twenty minutes.
Use runtime and description as an identity check
Compare the item’s title, runtime and description with what you intended to watch. A trailer, essay, archival conversation and full feature serve different purposes. Do not use one attractive thumbnail as the only guide when several related items appear together.
The current page for The Rules of the Game, for example, separates supporting material under Supplements. Treat it as an illustration of the interface, not a promise that every film has the same extras or the same collection layout.
| Item type | Viewing purpose |
|---|---|
| Feature film | The main film experience |
| Trailer or introduction | A short entry into the film or collection |
| Interview | A participant’s discussion or recollection |
| Video essay | An analysis with its own author and subject |
| Commentary item | A separately identified supporting format where offered |
Choose supplements around a specific question
After identifying the feature, choose the supporting item relevant to your interest: a director’s account, a historical discussion or a critical essay. Read its own description and publication context. A supplement can enrich a film without replacing the film’s narrative or serving as a neutral account of every production fact.
A hypothetical viewer comparing editing choices might save one essay with its title and author where shown. Another who wants a general introduction can select that format instead. Purposeful selection is more useful than playing every related clip because it shares artwork.
Keep streaming availability separate from the shop
Criterion says not all Collection disc releases are available on the Channel. If search leads to a physical edition, return to the streaming listing before assuming that the film or its disc extras are included. A linked sign-in is also separate from the two products’ billing.
If the intended film is missing, record that as an availability question. If a listed film fails mid-playback, record the title, runtime position and error as a delivery question. Selecting a different supplementary video would not explain that failure.
Save the exact item you recommend
Keep a film link for the feature and an individual supplement link for a particular interview or essay. Include its title when sharing a viewing note. That helps the next viewer open the intended format instead of reaching the same collection and choosing a different related video.
