U.S. Open golf: qualifying, championship rounds and the cut

Understand the USGA golf championship’s local and final qualifying stages and distinguish it from the tennis US Open.

The U.S. Open in golf is the men’s major championship organised by the USGA. It is a different event from the tennis US Open, despite sharing an everyday name.

Its route includes local qualifying, final qualifying and the championship itself, with exemptions placing some players directly into later stages. Final qualifying is therefore not the final round of the major.

Local and final qualifying have different lengths

The 2026 local stage used eighteen holes. Final qualifying used 36 holes and included players advancing from local qualifying alongside locally exempt entrants. A qualifier’s programme can therefore contain a demanding two-round day before the championship begins.

The major is a new four-round contest

The championship has four eighteen-hole rounds. Scores earned in qualification secure entry; they do not become a starting stroke advantage in the major. A player’s championship score begins with the championship rounds.

The halfway cut is low sixty and ties

After 36 championship holes, the low sixty scorers and ties continue into the final 36. This in-event cut is separate from qualifying for the field. A player can succeed at final qualifying and still miss the major’s cut.

A tied championship has a specific playoff

The 2026 conditions specify a two-hole aggregate playoff if players tie after 72 holes. That is a championship tie-break, not another qualifying stage or a full additional scheduled round.

Use the sport and stage in a watchlist

U.S. Open golf final qualifying and U.S. Open tennis qualifying are unrelated programmes. Preserve golf, year and stage beside the players or venue. Those details establish the contest more reliably than the shared event name alone.
