BFI Player: Subscription, Rentals and Free film collections

Use BFI Player’s three viewing categories and film-level accessibility information before choosing an offer.

BFI Player organises films into Subscription, Rentals and Free. These are distinct access categories, so a film appearing on the site should not be treated as automatically included in a monthly membership. Its own website and partner-channel subscriptions also use separate account systems.

Read the category attached to the film

Subscription covers its current selected collection; Rentals are individual pay-as-you-go films; Free contains material offered without that purchase. Open the actual film page and identify the category before deciding what account or transaction is needed.

A hypothetical viewer arriving from a festival recommendation may find a rental while already holding a subscription. That is a catalogue category question, not necessarily an account failure. Check the offer beside the chosen film rather than assume every title on the website belongs to the same collection.

Accessibility is a film-level feature

BFI Player describes selected audio-described and closed-captioned films and provides accessibility filtering within its search categories. Inspect the film’s own accessibility field and the current supported playback route. A foreign-language subtitle option and a closed-caption option should not be assumed to be identical.

If a viewer needs a particular accessibility feature, confirm that need before the rental step. Keep the exact film and edition with the result. A feature found on one title does not establish that every item in the same collection provides it.

Partner channels are separate services

BFI’s help explains that its Amazon and Apple channel subscriptions are separate from the website subscription. They do not provide the website’s rental system, and their logins cannot simply be used as a BFI Player website account. Use the route associated with the actual purchase.

For a household film night, record the film, category, accessibility requirement and viewing platform. That short note distinguishes a rental transaction from a membership and prevents a partner-channel login question from becoming a second purchase.

Consult BFI’s current help for the intended device and offer. If a requirement remains unclear, resolve it before payment rather than infer compatibility or a track from a logo, a review or the general availability of the app.
