National and regional names do different workRTP Açores has a specific island audienceInternational and regional are not synonymsMatch the published schedule, not just the languagePortuguese-language viewing can mean a national RTP programme, an island-region bulletin or a service made for audiences outside Portugal. Those purposes are visible in RTP’s service names and are worth preserving in a programme reference.
National and regional names do different work
RTP’s official channels page identifies RTP1 and RTP2 alongside services including RTP Madeira. Its own guide also distinguishes RTP3 and RTP Internacional. A shortened label such as “RTP” therefore identifies an organization more clearly than a particular transmission.
For everyday favourites, keep the full service name. An international news interest, a general entertainment programme and a regional island programme may all begin with the same organization’s initials while requiring different entries.
RTP Açores has a specific island audience
RTP’s distribution description says RTP Açores gives a voice to the archipelago’s nine islands and their residents. That is a local editorial purpose, not a generic substitute for national Portuguese programming. A viewer seeking news from an island community should retain the locality or programme title as well as the channel.
The same principle applies to Madeira: the regional name is meaningful. Do not discard an island service as an apparent duplicate merely because it shares RTP branding with a national channel.
International and regional are not synonyms
A regional programme can interest a person living abroad, but that does not make every international service a complete copy of the regional schedule. The viewer’s location and the programme’s editorial location are separate.
For example, a hypothetical emigrant household wanting an Azorean bulletin should ask for RTP Açores and the named edition, rather than assuming any Portuguese international entry answers the need. A current broadcaster programme link is a more precise reference than a remembered position in a former cable guide.
Match the published schedule, not just the language
When comparing two guide entries, record the exact RTP service, programme date and time reference. A programme replay and its first transmission can have different placements even though their titles match.
Keep the original Portuguese title when possible, including an episode or bulletin edition. That protects against confusing a similarly named magazine with a news bulletin. Channel identity, episode identity and access should be confirmed as separate facts; this reference does not establish carriage by any subscription.
