Recognize VRT’s service namesRecognize RTBF’s separate familyCommunity identity is more useful than a broad flagResolve apparent duplicates by editorial purposeBelgian television is easier to navigate by broadcaster and language community than by country label alone. VRT and RTBF are distinct reference families, and a numbered name in one family should not be assumed to identify a service in the other.
Recognize VRT’s service names
VRT International describes VRT Canvas as a television network of the Flemish public broadcaster and Ketnet as its children’s offering. Those names distinguish a broadcaster’s editorial services; Ketnet is not simply a generic label for every children’s programme from Belgium.
When a household asks for Flemish programming, keep the exact service or programme title. A Dutch-language preference and a particular broadcaster preference can overlap, but they are not identical requests.
Recognize RTBF’s separate family
Belgium’s CSA identifies La Une, Tipik and La Trois among RTBF’s linear services. It also distinguishes Tipik television from Tipik radio. The shared brand makes the media type worth retaining when a search returns several entries.
RTBF’s own help material separates linear television from programming on Auvio. A programme appearing online is not automatically evidence of a simultaneous transmission on every RTBF channel. Use the programme page to identify the title and the schedule to identify the live service.
Community identity is more useful than a broad flag
For a mixed-language household, preserve the original service names instead of translating La Une or replacing every Flemish entry with “Belgium Dutch.” The original name is a better match to broadcaster schedules and on-screen identities.
A hypothetical family following a French-language current-affairs programme and Flemish children’s television has two distinct needs. A single Belgian folder can contain both, but the favourite labels should keep the language and service recognizable.
Resolve apparent duplicates by editorial purpose
A small guide number is platform-specific; a broadcaster’s own service number or name is part of its identity. Two entries called “one” in translation do not therefore denote the same programme.
For news, retain the bulletin title and edition. For sport or a drama, retain the event or episode and the exact service announced by the broadcaster. This allows a real comparison without inferring inclusion, rights or language tracks from a logo alone.
