It is not the series score and does not award points. The blocks divide a possible seven-game series between the higher and lower seeds.
For the 2026 Finals, the higher seed hosts the opening two games, the lower seed hosts the next two, then the venue alternates for each remaining game if required. Reading those blocks correctly makes a programme list much clearer.
Expand the blocks into game numbers
Call the higher seed H and the lower seed L in an imaginary series. The venue order is H, H, L, L, H, L, H. The first 2 describes two consecutive home games for H, the next 2 two for L, and the remaining ones alternate.
The notation does not mean a team has won two games, lost two and then won three. A series result is a separate ledger of game wins. The hosting pattern exists before those results are known.
| Possible game | Host seed |
|---|---|
| 1 and 2 | Higher |
| 3 and 4 | Lower |
| 5 | Higher |
| 6 | Lower |
| 7 | Higher |
Only the necessary games are played
Best of seven means the first team to four wins takes the title. If one team wins the first four, the final three hosting assignments never become competitive fixtures. They were possibilities in the programme, not obligations to keep playing after the result is settled.
This is why if necessary is meaningful beside Game 5, 6 or 7. A complete archived series can contain fewer recordings than a prospective seven-slot schedule without anything being missing.
The other rounds use other patterns
The 2026 first round is best of three with 1–1–1 hosting, and the semi-finals are best of five with 2–2–1. The round name determines which pattern applies. A generic WNBA playoffs label cannot identify the expected venue sequence by itself.
Do not infer the home club from a previous game either. The Finals include single-game venue switches later in the series, while the first two blocks contain consecutive games at one home court.
Home-court advantage is an opportunity
The higher seed receives the larger possible share of home games. That allocation does not guarantee a win in any of them or ensure that the maximum number is played. A lower seed can win away, and a short series can finish before later higher-seed home slots are needed.
A precise description can therefore say higher seed hosts rather than implying that the seed has already gained a result. Seeding, location and outcome are three connected but distinct facts.
Save game number and round together
Finals Game 3 and semi-final Game 3 belong to different series lengths and different hosting patterns. Preserve the year as well, because formats have changed. Those details make the fixture understandable even when a familiar court image or team pairing appears in several seasons.
