That difference can make a second game decisive even when the first game was extremely one-sided.
The 2026 format is best of three. A club needs two match wins to advance, and tied games are settled by penalties without extra time. The result of each game contributes one win to the series ledger.
Use a series ledger rather than adding goals
Imagine fictional club Pine City winning Game 1 by 5–0 against fictional club Lake United. Pine City leads the series one win to none. It has not created a five-goal cushion that Lake United must erase in Game 2.
If Lake United wins Game 2 by 1–0, the series is tied at one win each. A third game is needed. Adding the scores to announce Pine City as a 5–1 aggregate winner would apply the wrong competition mechanism. This imaginary example is deliberately lopsided to make the distinction visible.
A penalty shoot-out wins that game
A game level after regulation goes directly to a penalty shoot-out in Round One. The shoot-out supplies the match winner, and that win counts in the series. The series is not left drawn simply because neither team led after 90 minutes.
Suppose Pine City then wins Game 3 on penalties after a drawn match. Pine City advances with two game wins to one. The shoot-out does not need to overcome a season-long goal difference or an aggregate score from the previous games.
Home-away-home is conditional at the end
The higher seed hosts Games 1 and 3; the lower seed hosts Game 2. Game 3 occurs only when required. A club winning the first two games finishes the series without a third.
A watchlist should therefore preserve if necessary beside a third-game entry. It should also keep the game number rather than calling the second match a return leg. The phrase return leg tends to suggest aggregate scoring, while Game 2 correctly points to another separate result in a series.
The rules change after Round One
Conference semi-finals and the later rounds use single-match elimination. In those rounds, a match level after normal time proceeds to extra time before penalties if needed. The immediate penalty route used in Round One should not be carried into the conference final or MLS Cup.
This makes the complete stage title more useful than a generic play-offs tag. A viewer returning after several days needs to know whether the programme continues a series or decides a one-match tie.
Keep the championship and regular-season honours distinct
The Supporters’ Shield recognises the regular-season record; MLS Cup comes from the play-off tournament. A strong regular season influences the path through seeding and hosting, but the Round One series still has to be won. Following those two achievements separately makes a club’s season easier to describe precisely.
