That is how the two short tournaments are organised, rather than a penalty or a deleted result.
For 2026/27, FMF names the competitions Apertura 2026 and Clausura 2027. Each has its own 17-round qualifying phase and its own final phase.
Follow one fictional club through the change
Imagine Club Azul finishing the Apertura qualifying phase in fourth place. That position orders its entry into the Apertura final phase. Whether it subsequently wins or loses a knockout tie, the result belongs to the Apertura title race.
When Club Azul begins Clausura 2027, it is entering the other short tournament. Its earlier fourth place does not become a four-point head start, and an Apertura knockout win does not place it directly into the Clausura quarter-finals. The Clausura qualifying table must develop through its own matches.
Separate a season from the competitions inside it
The season label 2026/27 is a convenient umbrella. It does not require every title within that season to come from one year-long league table. Apertura and Clausura are the identifiers that tell the reader which title is being contested.
This matters in archives because the same two clubs can meet under the same Liga MX branding in different short tournaments. The teams alone may not identify the fixture; the short-tournament name and year complete that identity.
Use the current final-phase threshold
The 2026/27 regulations put eight eligible clubs directly into each final phase after Jornada 17. A reference to a Play-In from another edition should not be imported into this one.
For the fictional club, fourth and ninth therefore have very different consequences at the qualifying finish. Fourth sits inside the eight-team sporting qualification band. Ninth is outside it; there is no general additional Play-In route in these regulations to assume from an older guide.
Keep the match label attached to its bracket
A useful full description might read “Apertura 2026, semi-final, second leg”. Each part answers a separate question: the short tournament, edition, round and fixture within the tie.
A later listing reading “Clausura 2027, Jornada 3” starts a different comparison. It should be read against that tournament’s table and round history. Preserving these labels makes a two-title season understandable without flattening it into a single standings list.
